Coat Short, smooth, glossy and dense that ranges from fine to medium coarse.
Origin Originating in the America in the mid 1700s, the ancestors of this breed were brought to America from Germany by the Jonathan Plott family in the 1750s. They have remained almost exclusively with the Plott family for over 250 years except for a very few that were sold or given as gifts. They were used to hunt bear, coyotes, wolves, raccoons and coyotes and are still mainly used for hunting today.
Description This intelligent, active breeds loves to work and loves to hunt. They make excellent hunters. They are courageous, aggressive, bold and confident in the hunt. They can make good, loyal family companions for active families. They need plenty of exercise and room to roam. Early socialization is important or children other dogs and pets. They are easy to train. They can be headstrong when it comes to a chase and will keep going until they reach what they are tracking. They need to be kept in a fenced in yard or walked on a leash because of their instinct to chase. They can make good watch dogs as well.
Health A very healthy breed. It is prone to gastric torsion and twisting of the stomach due to eating their food too quickly, which can be life-threatening. Exercising immediately after eating should be avoided.
