Origin Originating in Rome over 2000 years ago, the Neapolitan Mastiff is a descendent of the Molossus dog breed from Rome. They were introduced to Europe around 500 BC. The Neapolitan Mastiff was used in Roman arena fights and was a dog of war. They have been traditionally used as guard, army and police dogs.
Description This low key, protective and powerful breed makes an excellent watchdog. They are extremely protective of house and home and are wary of strangers. Early training and socialization is a must for the Neapolitan Mastiff. They are a very intelligent breed and learn rather quickly. They can get along well with children, but are much better for older, more mature children that will not tease or pester them. They can get along with other dogs, although male Neapolitan Mastiffs are more aggressive in general and can be dog aggressive. With early socialization, they can get along with other family pets. They Neapolitan Mastiff needs regular exercise, walks and play. When they are younger, they should not be over exercised.
