Origin Originating in Germany, the German Shepherd was first recognized in the late 1800s. Captain Max von Stephanitz is credited with developing the breed into what it is today. Traditionally mainly used for hunting and as a guard dog or watchdog.
Description This highly intelligent, loyal and energetic breed makes an excellent watchdog. They can do well with children, other pets and dogs, but early socialization is highly recommended. They need to learn to not be over protective and they need to learn to obey from an early age. They also make excellent herding animals and are often used in police work because of their trainability and good sense of smell. They need plenty of exercise and do not need to be cooped up inside all day long. The German Shepherd enjoys companionship and being with his family. Might be wary of strangers and strange animals.
Health Due to poor breeding, this once healthy breed has seen an increase in various health problems including hip and elbow displaysia, eye problems, epilepsy, heard problems, thyroid issues, blood disorders and digestive problems.
