Origin
The ancestors of the Finnish
Spitz are believed to be from Central Russia and are over 2000 years old.
When the Finno-Ugrian people moved from Rush to Finland, they brought
these dogs with them. The Finnish Spitz originated in Finland and was
developed by breeding the Russian dogs with English Spitz dogs. They are
the national dogs of Finland. They were mainly used as hunting dogs but
now are used as family pets as well.
Description
This high energy, intelligent,
friendly breed makes a good family pet. They are good with children and
other pets. They do best when socialized early with other dogs as they
can be dog aggressive at times. Somewhat head strong, the Finnish Spitz
can be hard to train. They are dogs that are prone to barking and can
make a lot of noise at times. Although they tend to be indifferent towards
strangers, they will alert you to when a stranger is present. They require
plenty of activity and regular play and exercise. They do best when they
are not cooped up all day inside and are given some room to roam.
Health
An overall healthy and hardy
breed. Very minor problems with PRA and hip displaysia.
