Origin Often called the ancestor to all spaniels, the English Springer Spaniel originated in England as early as the 1500s. They were bred to help in hunting by flushing and retrieving animals.
Description This intelligent, energetic, social breed makes a good family pet. They are good with children. They also do well with other pets and dogs, particularly if they have early socialization. They sometimes have trouble with smaller pets because of their hunting instinct. They tend to have a lot of energy and need plenty of time for play and exercise. If they are cooped up inside all day, they can find ways to enjoy themselves which could include getting into things that you don't want them to play with. They love companionship and don't like to be left alone for long stretches of time. They still make excellent hunting dogs. English Springer Spaniels are usually bred for either hunting or show and the show strain tends to be calmer.
Health Minor problems with hip dysplasia, PRA, seizuring, temperament disorders, PFK deficiency and eye, ear and skin problems. Also might have a VERY rare disorder that is called Rage Syndrome in which they could attack owners or other people or dogs without warning. This is very rare, but you should ask breeders about a history of Rage Syndrome before purchasing an English Springer Spaniel.
