Origin Dating back as far as the 15th Century, the Dachshund originated in Germany. They were mainly used to hunt badger. In fact they get their name from the German word "Dachs" meaning badger and "hund" meaning dog. Today's Dachshunds are a mix between hounds and terriers. They carry many of the terrier characteristics with them. They are mainly companion dogs today.
Description Energetic and lovable, the Dachshund makes an excellent family pet. They do well with children and other pets, especially when they are socialized from the beginning. They can be jealous of other pets and dogs, especially if you get a new pet and they are no longer the center of attention. They are very playful and love to have attention. They need regular exercise and play and are not meant to be cooped up all the time. Since they are small dogs, they can work well as apartment dogs provided you can take them out for fresh air and a daily walk. Dachshunds are trainable but can be stubborn at times when training them. Watch where you step as Dachshunds are very small and tend to get under you feet a lot.
Health An overall healthy breed. Due to their long body, Dachshunds have problems with spinal disc problems that can lead to permanent damage. Also problems with diabetes, urinary tract infections and a tendency to overeat and gain weight.
