Origin
Originating in Lousiana, the
Catahoula Leopard Dog is named after the Catahoula Parish in Northeastern
Louisiana. They were developed by early settlers. Working as a team with
other Catahoula Leopard Dogs, they were used to round up livestock, such
as hogs or cattle, that had escaped. They have also been used for hunting.
Description
This energetic, strong breed
loves to work. They were bred to round up stray livestock and that is
what they want to do. They need plenty of room to run and roam and are
not meant to be indoors or to have a small yard. They are not meant for
apartment life. They can be quite territorial and protective. They work
best with children and other dogs and pets when they are well socialized
with them. They are wary of strangers and strange animals. They make excellent
farm dogs and watchdogs.
Health
A relatively healthy breed. Some
problems with deafness, hip dysplasia and eye problems.
