Origin The Bergamasco Sheepdog is native to Italy. It has been mainly used for herding in the alpine regions of Italy. The long hair over the eyes was served to keep the sun shining on the snow from blinding them. Once facing extinction, the Bergamasco is now found in Italy, other parts of Europe and the US.
Description This highly intelligent breed makes an excellent herding dog and watch dog. They were raised to be independent, spending time alone or with other Bergamascos shepherding in the Alps. They are very friendly dogs and are easily trained. They make a wonderful family pet and are great with children. They can be good with dogs and other pets, but do best if they are raised with them from the time they are puppies. These dogs love to work, need exercise and are not meant to be kept inside all day. They tend to be energetic and need room to roam.
Health A very healthy breed. No known genetic problems.
