Origin Belgian Sheepdog, also known as the Groenendael or Chien de Berger Belge, was developed by a breeder form Groenendael, Belgium. It is one of four breeds of Belgian Sheepdogs. In some countries all four Belgian Sheepdogs are considered one breed. The Belgian Sheepdog is recognized as it's own breed by the AKC. It has been used to herd sheep and cattle, as a police dog and during both World Wars for search and rescue and do deliver messages.
Description This intelligent, protective and energetic dog is used more as a pet rather than working dog like some of the other Belgian Sheepdogs. They make an excellent farm dog, watchdog and herding dog and a great family pet as well. They need to be socialized and trained from an early age. The earlier they are introduced to children, dogs and other pets, the better they will do. The Belgian Sheepdog has a lot of energy and loves to be on the go. They need plenty of room to run and play. They are not meant to be indoors all day. It is important to do your research on the Beligian Sheepdog before purchasing. They can have an aggressive nature, so the more you know about the particular dog you plan to adopt, the better. Those who show signs of high aggression may not make the best family pet.
Health A very healthy breed. Some minor problems with hip dysplasia, thyroid problems, eye problems, epilepsy and low anesthesia tolerance.
